Local
Hero cheese maker wins big in national competition
The American Cheese Society’s annual conference
has been called the "Oscars of the cheese
world," and we are excited to announce that
a Local Hero farmer took home two blue ribbons
from this year’s event, held at the end
of July.
Out
of 1200 overall entries, two cheeses by John
Miller’s Goat Rising Farm in Charlemont
rose to the top:
1st
Place in the smoked goat’s milk category
Goat Rising Nubian Smoked Cheddar
1st
Place in the goat’s cheese spread category
Goat Rising Creamy Dill
In
2006, John won a blue ribbon in the ricotta category
for his Jersey milk ricotta. Congratulations to
John and everyone at Goat Rising!

Or
visit the Curtis Country store on Route 2 in Charlemont
center, which carries all their available cheeses.
John
also wants Local Hero chefs to know that his quality
farmstead cheeses are available at very competitive
prices. Contact him to learn more: Goatrising@verizon.net

Local Hero corn
maze featured in national food magazine
Congratulations
to Local Hero farmer Mike Wisseman and his artistic
collaborator Will Sillin. Their 2006 corn maze,
which featured a portrait of Julia Child, was
featured in the August/September edition of Saveur,
a nationally
distributed food and cooking magazine.
You
can see a picture of the maze on Mike’s
Web site. Saveur
is available on newsstands throughout the region.
The
2007 maze will feature a portrait of Louis Armstrong
and have lots of fun musical diversions, as reported
in The
Daily Hampshire Gazette this
week.
Slaughterhouse
update
Local Hero farmers who planned to access Adams
Farm for slaughter services this fall would be
well advised to find alternative sites immediately.
Local Hero member Dave Freeman reports that work
has not yet begun on reconstruction and that it
seems unlikely that Adams will be available for
the fall season this year.
Dan
Carmel, who offered slaughter services
to Local Hero farmers earlier this year, confirms
that he is still available. Take note
– he has a new phone number: 413-842-7592.
Dan says that he can coordinate slaughter for
both livestock and poultry.
